Time Will Tell
An Animated Film
Script
Let me tell you a little bit about the past and the present… and a lot about the future.
Some things have changed, between you and me. Others haven’t.
Climate change is happening in your present and mine.
The summers here are warmer and wetter. And winters bring less snow and more flooding.
Our oceans are warmer, too.
Oh, and pollution still poses a threat to our health.
All of these challenges still exist, of course… And it’s hard work.
But we have learned quite a lot, between you and me. And we have some tried and tested tricks up our sleeves.
Listen to people. Listen to science. Harness technology. Speak to those in power and get them to take action. Most of all, work together and things will get easier, between you and me.
Of course we’re not immune. But this is how you can become more resilient. Better prepared. More empowered. And we’re helping others to do the same.
So, there’s reason to hope, between you and me.
Background
Time Will Tell is a story about a letter sent from your future self. It is inspired by the activities being carried out by the RESIST Project, a five-year project that has emerged from the need to make regions more resilient to climate change.
In RESIST, climate adaptation strategies are tested in four experienced EU regions focusing on solutions to five key climate challenges: floods, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, and soil erosion. The activities carried out bring together representatives of from all corners of society, ranging from civilians to farmers and city authorities to business owners, policymakers, researchers, and much more.
A crucial element of the project is that the findings and solutions tested in these lighthouse regions will be shared with eight twinned European regions that are less experienced in climate adaptation pathways.
Time Will Tell aims to capture this ethos of co-creation, mutual learning and climate positivity. At the same time, it does not shy away from the realities of climate change, which are in motion and must be addressed with fact-based and validated solutions. “Climate change is happening in your present and mine. The summers here are warmer and wetter (…) All of these challenges still exist, of course, and it’s hard work,” our narrator tells us.
This is an important message to share with young learners. There is no magic button to end the effects climate change, but we can become more resilient.
“Listen to people. Listen to science. Harness technology,” our narrator adds in Time Will Tell. The idea is to get learners to reflect on how a society can become more resilient to climate challenges. What can we change about our current habits? Our current ways of doing things? How to we instill lasting change in our society?
RESIST works with a number of climate adaptation strategies that range from technological advances with the use of Digital Twin technologies and early alert systems that warn of adverse weather patterns and nature-based solutions to mitigate flooding to changes in governance structures and education strategies.
