EU Green Week

Guimarães, Portugal

Guimarães confirmed as 2026 European Green Capital during EU Green Week. Mayor of Guimarães Domingos Bragança and Patrick Child, acting director-general of the European Commission’s environment department, signed a letter of intent confirming Guimarães as the 2026 European Green Capital.

Mayor Bragança also announced plans to create the Capital Verde Europeia (CVE) 2026 Sustainability Hub in Guimarães by 2030. The centre, with an expected investment of nearly EUR 15 million, will focus on innovation and research, community engagement and promoting a green, inclusive and liveable city. Referred to as a ‘Landscape Laboratory 2.0’, the hub aims to continue the legacy of Guimarães as the 2026 European Green Capital.
