Sharing Climate Solutions From Southern Europe
Script
I don’t remember it ever being this hot.
Nor do I. The forests are dry.
I worry about the future of our community.
In my community, we see how wildfires are worsening each year.
They wouldn’t spread so fast if we had people working in the forest.
In my community, we are reviving traditional jobs like mine, which create productive firebreaks in the forests, keep the undergrowth down and sustainably manage the trees.
It also provides me with an income, so that my family can stay in the area.
In my region, we have come up with a plan to sustainably manage our forests
in a way that helps biodiversity and gives us access to resources and biofuels, reducing our carbon emissions.
In my region, we are witnessing more droughts and floods.
This damages my crops and erodes my soil.
Restoring our ecosystems can help us reduce these risks,
In my community, we are turning to nature-based solutions to mitigate the effects of flooding and restore the natural balance of the ecosystem.
In my community, thanks to rapid alert systems, we are able to predict and prepare for extreme events, whether that be wildfires or floods.
We’re sharing these systems with others.
This kind of technology can be replicated for other regions that face these challenges this way not also does not only benefit us…
… but also us.
Because we are all together in facing these challenges but also putting in place the solutions.
Background
Local communities across southern Europe are facing the effects of climate change together. While the impact of climate challenges like floods, wildfires, drought and erosion can differ from region to region, many of the solutions to these risks can be shared.
This animated video tells some of those stories, from the people adapting local forests to mitigate wildfires to those developing nature-based solutions and rapid alert to boost the resilience of cities, towns, and villages.
As part of the EU co-funded project RESIST, 12 regions are researching, validating and sharing climate solutions to build resilience. In southern Europe, communities of actors in Portugal, Spain, Italy, France and Greece are working to address climate change challenges, many of which they have in common.
