Heated Climate Change Debate in Norway’s Vesterålen
A recent survey suggests that only half of Vesterålen’s population believes human activity is the main driver behind climate change. The survey initiated by the local partners in the RESIST Project in Vesterålen has ignited a local debate about climate change in the Arctic regions of Northern Norway, underlining the need to keep building knowledge and raising awareness about climate challenges.
Find more information below for the GAIA Arctic Summit event that will take place in Vesterålen on 6-7 June 2024.
RESIST Coordinator Vilija Balionyte-Merle from SINTEF presented the project to a wide audience of participants interested in the climate change resilience of regions in Norway and Normandy. The first event was organised by the Research Council of Norway in Oslo in January gathering local authorities, researchers and companies to discuss community action for climate adaptation.
The RESIST Project was briefly referenced at the European Naval Defence conference, which took place in Cherbourg, Normandy in February.

Sometimes they are even able to grow tomatoes out in the open field, something she said would have been unimaginable in her childhood.
Tuula and the gardening community in the area are also facing stormwater drainage issues, something the RESIST Project aims to tackle with nature-based solutions.
