Watch the first of our three video chapters from Norway
The region of Vesterålen in northern Norway offers striking scenery. Its rugged mountains and bountiful seas have shaped local communities over the centuries. But it also faces many climate challenges such as rising sea levels, rising temperatures and more frequent adverse weather events.
These challenges threaten local infrastructure and vital industries like fishing and fish farming. Watch these 3 videos to hear directly from local voices about the issues they face in this RESIST region.
In 2023, just over half of Vesterålen’s population said they believed climate change was mainly caused by humans.
This chapter looks at northern Norway’s views on climate change
In this final chapter, we hear from local authorities and initiatives on creating a climate-conscious and environmentally friendly community in northern Norway.

RESIST Media Session: Advancing Climate Emergency Reporting in European Newsrooms
The RESIST project strengthens European societies’ resilience to climate change by improving journalists’ ability to report on climate hazards and extreme weather. This session will equip media professionals with the tools, knowledge and networks to produce accurate, timely and impactful reporting that serves local communities and vulnerable populations.
Drawing on the forest fires in Portugal, participants will hear from experts and practitioners on ethical reporting during an emergency. There will also be a hands-on session to identify gaps and co-create guidelines for reporting on climate change-related emergencies.

In Normandy, the effects of climate change on biodiversity are palpable. Droughts are affecting beech trees and there is also a notable drop in the number of migratory birds passing through. In response, the Region and its partners, guided by the Norman IPCC’s work, are implementing the Regional Biodiversity Strategy, placing nature-based solutions at the heart of their climate adaptation efforts.

Accelerating the Delivery of Climate Adaptation Solutions
From floods in Spain to wildfires in Greece and heatwaves across Europe, climate change impacts are here. “Compared to a decade ago, these events are more severe and frequent, while geopolitical and economic crises have left governments with fewer resources to cope,” says Vilija Balionyte-Merle, a researcher at SINTEF and Project Manager of RESIST Project.
Balionyte-Merle notes that different European regions and cities face varying climate risks and preparedness levels, so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. This is why the RESIST project, funded by the EU Adaptation Mission, focuses on region-specific climate solutions.

Wildfires Rage Across Northern Portugal
The deadly wildfires that have swept across Portugal, including the pilot region of the RESIST Project in central Portugal, are a stark reminder of the need to increase our resilience to extreme climate events.
These fires devastated local communities and released millions of tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere.
Climate change is set to increase the frequency of wildfires, so we need to prepare communities and landscapes to mitigate the damage. There are ways to reduce fire damage, including strategies that also restore local economic opportunities, and the RESIST project is working in this area.
RESIST’s thoughts go out to all those affected by the forest fires in Portugal.
